Margarita took a full day to pull together what she needed and to rest. While time was important, she knew that she and Darwin needed to recover from their initial encounter with the nymphs. The nymphs were strong and possessed intelligence. She needed to be at her fighting best in case they attacked her again.
As she had expected, her shoulder turned blue and purple and green with bruising from the severed claw. She treated the swelling with a holistic spray a grateful client had gifted to her after a mission she had flown with the Red Barons.
She needed to replenish her supply, she mused, as she watched the swelling go down and the bruising fade. Maybe she and Darwin would head to Weegan once they had finished here. The thought cheered her.
And she would finish this—she wouldn’t leave until she made sure Rose and her bath house were safe and still in business.
The next morning, as most mornings on Harmos, dawned clear and warm. The breeze had shifted to offshore, bringing the faint, dry scent of dust to the waterfront.
The fishing crews didn’t like offshore breezes and Margarita heard much grumbling and muttering as she and Darwin made their way through the docks to Mountain Way. After picking up a couple of crab omelets from a small breakfast cart, it took them no time to make their way to Rose’s place.
Unsurprised that no one answered her knock at the bath house, Margarita turned away from the door. She knew that Rose was most likely still with her brother. There was no point in reopening the bathing rooms until the nymphs had been dealt with.
“I hear you found Rosie.” Captain Allen leaned out his window. His red hair stood in clumpy tufts again, giving him the air of an absentminded clown.
Did he ever think to comb it? she wondered with an inward smile. Margarita waved and started to walk away, but a sudden thought struck and she turned back.
“Captain Allen, do you still have access to a boat of any sort?”
“Sure I do. I have a lot of friends on the waterfront, you know. Friends who didn’t think it was right for the mucky-farts to take away my license. Not like it was my fault a damned Kraken attacked my ship, you know.” He glared at Margarita.
She held up her hands, palms out, to calm him. “I’m sure you have lots of friends, Captain. Do you think you could find someone to take me out on the water later today?”
She did some mental calculations. Taking into account the time she needed to hike to the cave and back, she would need to begin looking for the dye by late afternoon.
“I’d need to be on the water by fifteen bells.” That should give her plenty of time.
Captain Allen narrowed his brown eyes. “And what would you be needing a ship for? You ain’t thinking of doing any illegal fishing are you? Cause if you are, that’s frowned upon here on Harmos. We protect our resources.
